What is the difference between stucco and EIFS?

Traditional stucco (hard coat) is a cement-based material applied over concrete block or lath. EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) is a multi-layered synthetic system applied over foam insulation board. EIFS looks similar but is lighter, softer to the touch, and has different maintenance requirements.
